Seed production

As well as growing fresh veg for our local community, we are passionate about Seeds.

They can go unseen and yet are a crucial part of food resilience. We all need seeds in order to grow vegetables, flowers, herbs and grains. Seed saving was once common practice for gardeners and farmers but has become a rare skill and the UK relies heavily on imports. As agricultural machinery and field sizes have grown in scale, seed production has become increasingly global, with the majority of the seed market owned by global companies. Seed is moved around globally like wheat, with the end consumer having no information about where it was grown or by whom, meaning seeds are often not adapted to our UK climate.

We are proud to be part of a movement of UK seed producers who are working to increase local seed production. When people save their own seed they get to choose the characteristics and qualities they want and keep the varieties they love. Seeds become quickly adapted to the local climate, meaning they’re stronger every year. By saving seed we can all protect varieties that are at risk of being lost and participate in an economy of exchange and gift, such as Seed Swaps. And we can learn to complete the cycle of growing food for ourselves and our communities.

We have thanks to give to The Gaia Foundation’s Seed Sovereignty programme for their work to increase seed resilience in the UK https://seedsovereignty.info/.

We offer workshops on seed saving, contact us for details.
